Summa Health System (SHS) is a non-profit integrated healthcare delivery system in Northeast Ohio, United States. The Greater Akron Chamber (Ohio) documents SHS as the largest employer in Summit County with more than 11,000 employees. SHS provides comprehensive emergency, acute, critical, outpatient and long-term/home care.

SHS’s integrated healthcare system consists of seven hospitals, 20 healthcare centers, three urgent care centers, five emergency rooms, a health plan (SummaCare), research and medical education, multiple foundations, as well as other entities.

Outpatient care is offered throughout Summit, Portage and Medina counties in several community health centers. The healthcare system provides patient care, medical research and continuing medical education, and is consistently ranked a top healthcare provider in the region.

Summa Health System (SHS) was formed in 1989 when Akron City Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital merged. SHS now encompasses a network of hospitals, community-based health centers, a health plan, a physician-hospital organization, an entrepreneurial entity, research and medical education and a foundation.

More than 2,000 licensed, inpatient beds are represented on the Summa Akron City, Summa St. Thomas, Western Reserve Hospital, and Summa Barberton Hospital campuses.

Outpatient care is offered in four community health centers and through partnerships with the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium and the Shaw Jewish Community Center.

2008

  • Jean and Milton Cooper Cancer Center opens on the campus of Summa Akron City Hospital.

2009

  • Summa Health System and Western Reserve Hospital Partners create joint venture of Western Reserve Hospital.
  • SummaCare receives accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), as the highest ranked plan in Ohio for its Medicare product and the second highest ranked plan in Ohio for its commercial products.

2010

  • Summa Akron City and St. Thomas Hospitals are designated as Magnet Hospitals.

2012

  • Summa Rehab Hospital opens on the campus of Summa Akron City Hospital.
  • The Summa Center for Clinical Trials becomes fully operational, supporting clinical trials across all Summa Health System specialty areas.

2013

  • Summa Health System announces a partnership with Cincinnati-based HealthSpan, a division of Catholic Health Partners.

2014

  • Summa Health System announces a course of layoffs affecting all facilities. Summa Wadsworth-Rittman becomes a health center, and no longer has in-patient beds. However, it still has a free-standing Emergency Room.

Summa Health System specializes in advanced bariatric care, behavioral health, cancer care, cardiovascular, neurosciences, orthopedics, senior health, sports health, surgical services and women’s health.

The Jean B. and Milton N. Cooper Cancer Center on the Summa Akron City Hospital campus provides outpatient cancer services. The 60,000-sq. ft. facility includes physician and support staff offices; a conference center; and cancer-related services including 28 infusion treatment areas, three radiation oncology treatment areas, diagnostic imaging, clinical research, rehabilitation services and educational and support services; and access to psychologists and physical therapists.

The Summa Wellness Institute is a 65,000-square-foot (6,000 m2) medical-based fitness facility in Hudson, Ohio. The Institute integrates fitness amenities and medical technology. Exercise physiologists create personalized fitness programs and health goals for each member after the completion of a thorough health assessment.

Summa Health Network (SHN) is the physician-hospital organization affiliated with Summa Health System Hospitals, including Akron City and St. Thomas. SHN oversees contracts with insurance companies, health-maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred-provider organizations (PPOs), employers, third-party administrators and other payors on behalf of Summa Health System Hospitals and their affiliated physicians. Summa Health Network comprises more than 1,000 providers in Northeast Ohio, including Summit, Medina and Portage counties, and provides medical coverage for more than 80,000 members in Northeast Ohio.

Summa Physicians Inc. (SPI) is a multi-specialty group of more than 300 physicians in more than 30 specialties across Summa Health System’s five-county service area. SPI physicians are employed physicians of Summa Health System. As the employed physicians of Summa Health System, SPI physicians provide healthcare through more than 100 locations throughout Ohio’s Summit, Medina, Portage, Stark and Wayne counties.

SummaCare



SHN’s SummaCare is a regional, provider-owned health plan. Formed in the early 1990s as a product offering for large, self-funded employers in Akron, SummaCare is a network of more than 7,000 healthcare physicians and 50 hospitals. The health plan network provides medical coverage for more than 80,000 members in Northeast Ohio, and is recognized as highest ranking plan in Ohio for its Medicare product and second highest ranked plan in Ohio for its Commercial products. The plan was also named for having the most effective disease management programs, receiving recognition for its asthma, heart failure and diabetes programs.

Ohio Health Choice



Ohio Health Choice is Ohio’s oldest Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) network and one of the largest in the state. Co-owned by Summa Health System and Mercy Medical Center (Canton, Ohio), Ohio Health Choice comprises 199 hospitals and 28,000 physicians and contracts with 94 third-party administrators covering members statewide.

Research



SHS’ Office of Research Administration promotes and facilitates research activities conducted by attending and resident physicians, fellows, faculty, staff and students working on investigator-initiated or industry/government-sponsored research and ensures all research-related activities at Summa are in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and institutional policies governing research. The Office also promotes and supports research collaborations with SHS’s academic partners, including the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (ABIA) and the Kent-Summa Initiative for Clinical & Translational Research (ICTR). SHS invests approximately $6.5 million annually in overall research support for many areas, including cardiology, cancer and geriatrics. Major research programs are supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

Education



Summa supports the education of its physicians and healthcare professionals, investing more than $23 million annually in medical education. Summa's Akron City and St. Thomas hospitals are teaching affiliates of the Northeastern Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), which includes a staff of more than 1,000 physicians and 13 accredited residency training programs. Summa Western Reserve Hospital is a teaching affiliate of Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University (OU-HCOM) and the Consortium of Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE).

Philanthropy



The Summa Health System Foundation is a non-profit philanthropic organization that was originally incorporated to improve the management of assets, and to provide a better vehicle for fund raising and grant review. Through the years, funds raised by the foundation have supported research, physician and nursing education, medical equipment, and patient education programs for SHS. Donations are received from patients and their families, employees, physicians and members of the communities served by SHS. The Foundation contributes an annual average of $9 million for the development of new programs, research projects, clinical innovations and other activities.
